Wow, What An Amazing Coincidence

Just yesterday I wrote about the latest session of the Gulf Cooperation Council and mentioned Saudi Arabias leading role, with Iran’s president on the left arm of the Saudi king. Then in the evening, suddenly and inexplicably, this report comes out of virtually nowhere that Iran halted its A-bomb program in 2003!

Isn’t that the most amazing coincidence? Or as Popeye would say, “Gee, whadda coinkydink.”

Yeah, riiiiight. Time Magazine is certain that “there is also no doubt that the Bush White House was behind this NIE. (National Intelligence Estimate)” The Arabs have been after Bush to wipe out Iran, not just slap them, because they see Iran as a rabid dog. It has to be killed, not kicked, or it will bite everyone. Bush is unwilling to commit to that large a war.

I take it, then, that the Gulf conference resulted in a consensus among the Arab states that they’ll have to deal with Iran on their own and can only count on the U.S. to render assistance, not do it all for them. This was relayed to Bush who then released this “new” intelligence, that somehow mysteriously had been totally unknown, to get him off the hook of bombing Iran.

The hawks in our government are going to erupt over this. “They were counting on Bush being the one President prepared to take on Iran. As recently as last month, Bush warned of World War III if Iran so much as thought about building a bomb. Bush’s betrayal is not going to go down well. The neocons, clinging to a sliver of hope, will accuse the intelligence community of incompetence, pointing out that as late as 2005 it estimated “with high confidence” that Iran was building a bomb.”

The problem with all this backpedalling is that we really can’t be sure about that NIE report. Iran could already have nukes from Russia or N. Korea, or they may be on the verge of making them, not in the 10 to 15 years now being claimed, but 1 year, or less. That time estimate has been bounced around more than a tennis ball at Wimbledon.

In all truth, another 5-year war would probably wreck this country. So much of our tax money has been literally exploded into ash and so little has been spent repairing our infrastructure that everything is decaying and collapsing. Another Katrina would be worse than the first one in economic impact.

We need to wrap up Iraq and let the Islamists worry about the monster in their midst, which they are, and greatly so. I don’t have much doubt that Iran will touch off a nuke eventually, and then everyone will attack them at once. This way we’ll make allies out of those goddam Arabs whether they like it or not. This is going to take the Islamic heat off Israel too. Israel is a primary force in the region and is now the ally of the Arabs when it comes to Iran. They now have no choice but to back away from anything that would reduce Israels military capacity, in order to save their own skins, and Israel has reinforced this by voicing serious doubts about this old “new intelligence”, thereby keeping alive their threatening presence to Iran.

This is so simple that I can’t understand why this course hasn’t been persued all along. It looks like Bush finally has someone with smarts whispering in his ear instead of ignorant mad dogs like Cheney and Rumsfeld.

This NIE doesn’t make sense. We only have the UNclassified version, but I have people who have seen the CLASSIFIED version, and they are very concerned. They think the assumption that Iran has no nuclear weapons program is NUTS.

  2. Rastaman Says:

Their assumption sounds like my own, but we’re not going to war with Iran for the above stated reasons until the Iranians actually either use, deploy or are in the act of deploying a nuke.

    Can U.S. Intelligence Be Trusted???…

I’m not being snide or tacky here, I’m asking a serious question. If Iran froze their nuclear weapons program in 2003, what the heck have our intelligence agencies been doing these last four years? It took them this long to…

Maybe it was because we crushed the Iraqi resistance and had 135,000 soldiers to the west and another 30,000 or so on the other side. I have always thought that the hidden agenda for Iraq was Iran.
