A View Of The Surge
There are signs the troop surge in Iraq is working. Even The San Francisco Chronicle, says that:
“Violence has receded to the levels of January 2006, before the bombing of the Golden Mosque in Samarra set off a sectarian civil war between Shiites and Sunni. By many accounts, al Qaeda in Iraq has been hammered. Sunni tribes, many of them former insurgents, have turned against al Qaeda in Iraq in what is called the Sunni awakening.
Many former Sunni insurgents in western Iraq, and increasingly Shiite groups in the south, are allied with American forces in what the military euphemistically calls groups of “concerned local citizens” to control their neighborhoods and regions. Radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr has lain low, avoiding a confrontation with U.S. forces. Syria is tightening its border to foreign fighters, and Iran has pulled back. The U.S. military contends that Iraqi security forces are improved and now control substantial parts of the battlefield.”
That should certainly qualify as “working”.
When this war started I was against it because of the blatant lies Bush and Cheney were telling as excuses for what is a war for oil resources. I came back around on it the more I realized that it IS a war for oil, which is in our national interest. I was reading an article linked to on Right Truth proclaiming Bush to be a brilliant strategist but I think the author gives him way too much credit. He forgot the disasters of the war’s beginnings, the inept lies and so forth. But that’s not what I’m about right now, only that it led to my digging into the media silence lately about the war. It has been strangely silent which is another good sign that we’re finally starting to win the damn thing.
Those in the very secretive White House are the ones in the know, and they’re deal-making with the Iraqi leaders now for a permanent military presence there. This wouldn’t be happening if they weren’t pretty certain of ultimate victory, which would do a lot more than just give us an oil source. It gives us an extremely strategic position in that seething Middle East hotbed and if anyone is a brilliant strategist it’s General Petraeus.
It’s clear now that a victory in Iraq is vital. The periodic rise of extremism is having its bloody period once again and even the Saudi royals fear it in spite of Saudi Arabia being the source of Wahabbism, the very worst form of Islam. Mostly they and all their neighbors greatly fear a nuclear Iran, as they know Iran would blackmail them all into submission and Amadinejad would have his Persian Caliphate.
A strong and alert U.S. military presence in Iraq puts a real damper on Iran. Not that they’ll ever back off of their ambitions, but they’ll stay a lot calmer as long as we’re staring down their throats. Likewise the other rich but abysmally backward countries of the region. Our presence will help keep the peace and keep the oil flowing.
The Democrats need to open their baby blues on this one and keep the funding coming. Yes, the war was poorly planned and conducted or it would be over by now, but that’s water under the bridge. It’s being properly run now and we must see it through. There’s no other choice. If we don’t, Iran will take over the Middle East, the oil will stop flowing entirely, and we will end up in a massive war instead of this much smaller one.

You must be talking about the Raymond S. Kraft article. I love reading his articles. He stirs passion in his readers, whether they agree with him or not. I don’t think Bush is the hero that Kraft indicates. If that were true, we would have been doing this Petraeus strategy years ago.
