Official leaks are the best kind. Leave it to a Jewish news source to blurt this one out. (Minor update - That sounds wrong. What I mean is that Israeli intelligence is usually ahead of everyone elses and they often say what others won’t.)

The Israelis attacked a nuclear research facility at Dir a-Zour! Nowhere else but here on this blog and at two links only will you find Dir A-Zour listed on Google. Wikipedia has nothing at all on Dir a-Zour. The other Google link refers to the area as a source of oil exports and a “research facility”. A search for Syrian oil resources, research, exports and so on produces absolutely no mention of Dir a-Zour!

Ron Ben-Yishai, reporter for Ynet News, took pictures and interviewed eyewitnesses living in the small town of Dir A-Zour located next to the research center. “One of the interviewees claimed to have heard sonic booms during the alleged Israeli attack, but said he did not hear explosions on the ground.” No doubt if the Syrians find out who said even that much, they’ll behead him with a dull butter knife. Dir A-Zour has clearly been shrouded in secrecy and it’s existence is taking on an “Area 51″ aura. It is apparently the only oil producing and oil research center in all of Syria, yet its name is virtually unmentioned. I don’t know if anyone else finds this strange but I sure do.

Syria has been pumping oil for quite a while. In fact, their production is rapidly declining as their wells are being pumped dry, and while high oil prices are maintaining their economy now, about half their oil production goes for the use of their own populace and further declines will eventually reduce Syria back to the land of dungheap Arabs that it was before. Syria has no other natural resources except sand. Possibly they’re looking to the future and hope to sell nuclear weapons to other Islamic regimes. Nukes bring big money.
