The Times Are A’changin’

Turkey has massed 140,000 troops along the Turkey-Iraq border, supposedly to deal with the approximately 4000 militant Kurds who keep making violent incursions into Turkey.

Bear in mind that the majority of Kurds, the same people that Saddam was gassing to death by the thousands, are muslims just like all the rest of the Iraqis and nearly all the Turks.

The Bush Boys keep telling the Turks to stay out of Iraq and “let George do it” but the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militants keep attacking over the border non-stop and lately have escalated the violence. They want to create a Communist state of Kurdestan out of part of Turkey and a corner of Iraq.

Somehow, 140,000 troops seems like overkill to get rid of 4000 rabble, and in fact that’s about how many troops we have over there. Does anyone besides me think that maybe the Turks have bigger ideas than just putting an end to Kurdish incursions?

There’s about 3 times as many Kurds living in Turkey as there are in Iraq and millions more living all over the world. Even though they were forced to submit to Islam in the 7th Century, they still maintain virtually a tribal identity similar to the religious cohesion of the Jews and many of them want to have their own country back again, just as the Jews have taken theirs back. Kurdish Islam is not as assertive as it is among most other muslims. Women have greater freedoms, for instance, and the Kurds aren’t known for fighting among themselves like other muslims. They stick together.

I do expect the Turks to launch a full-scale attack into Iraq soon regardless of Bush, and I expect Turkey to take permanent occupation of the area they invade. Including oil fields in Kurdish Iraq territory. That should get Bush’s testicles in a turmoil and explains why they need so many troops. The Iraqi Kurds aren’t going to take very kindly to a Turkish takeover of their oil fields.

This is going to open a huge can of worms. We won’t directly attack the Turks because they’re our allies, so while we’re loudly protesting their actions we will be quietly arming Hell out of the Kurds. This will result in some of the vast number of Kurds in Turkey joining the fight by attacking Turkey from within. There are lots more Kurds in Iran who may finally rise up as well, which could set off that civil war that’s been simmering in Iran for a long time now. At the same time we may well finally bomb Irans strategic targets because of the push here at home to get out of Iraq.

Oh yes. Hell is coming to breakfast, though I never suspected it would be served first by the Turks. Let’s not forget that Syria is telling its citizens to leave Lebanon, as well, because a Lebanon Civil War May Be Imminent. Analysts also predict that Syria is preparing for war with Israel. (This same article.) It’s believed that the civil war being pushed by Syria and Iran as a means of taking over Lebanon will spark renewed attacks on Israel both from Lebanon and Syria, and in fact, Syrian troops are massing near the Golan Heights.

Here is the post that Texas Fred was over reacting to. Since he has kept the details of the post from you, I thought I would let you judge for yourself.

This is not new for the Turks gathering on the border, but the number is greater this time than previously. I’ve been told that some of Sadr’s folks have been instigating problems in the North, in order to pull troops out of Baghdad into the North. i don’t really buy that though.
