One dead drug-addict gold digger with trailer trash habits is more important to our media than the victories of Democracy over Islam. “Somalia’s struggle to form a unified government after 15 years of clan warfare is achieving success, after the TFG and Ethiopian forces drove away the UIC and other destabilizing forces harbored there, said a U.S. diplomat. This joint victory of last December also withered away Eritrea’s hopes of destabilizing Ethiopia.

Ambassador Vicky Huddleston who recently served for 15 months as U.S. acting ambassador to Ethiopia told Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) on February 22 in Washington that Eritrea, hoped to use the conflict in Somalia to destabilize Ethiopia, which the government in Asmara sees as its arch enemy Ethiopia. “But this tactic failed.” ”

Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen make up the Sana’a Forum which was established in October 2000 and is currently meeting in Ethiopia to work out ways to deal with the continuing muslim attacks in Somalia. Near daily attacks by the remnants of the Islamist movement driven from Mogadishu on Dec. 28 have killed dozens of people, mostly civilians, and it’s feared the violence could spill over and destabilize the greater Horn of Africa region without urgent help.

That help is on its way, with as many as 8000 peacekeeping troops from Uganda, Burundi and possibly Nigeria and Tanzania. The United States will support the deployment by providing 15 million US dollars for airlift and other logistics.

Eritrea has an Islamic government, adjoins Ethiopia and is trying to Islamify that area of Africa in spite of having taken huge losses in war with Ethiopia. Somalia is rapidly gaining strength as a democracy because of Ethiopias intervention, and their success will be a big block against certain future efforts by Eritrea.

I don’t envy these people. Having insane neighbors who want to kill and dominate and don’t know when to quit, makes for a grim future outlook. Right now though, 15 years of constant open warfare in Somalia has come to an end and a true democratic government has been established. Hurrah!
