Elect Spiro Agnew Secretary-General of the UN. Election Update

UPDATE:… The United Nations General Assembly has a new president, Sheikha Haya Rashed Al Khalifa, an attorney from Bahrein and first woman in decades to serve as president of the General Assembly. Also a muslim. She says her religion will not affect her job performance. I bet.

The least important political race in history is now underway. Surely the mayoral election in Deadwood, South Dakota has more relevance. Or anywhere else but the UN. Never has such a well-publicised event been of so little importance to so many as the election of a new Secretary General.

Back in the heyday of Richard Nixons Presidency, he had chosen as running mate a fellow named Spiro Agnew, who incidentally, like the UN, had to retire when his criminal activities came to light. Spiro is mostly remembered for his use of English, and his phrase “An effete corps of snobs” applies extremely well to what remains of the UN.

The United Nations is the most useless financial drain on the planet. It’s nothing more than a gathering place for people to try to sound important. It reminds me of a cartoon where an office worker is standing around flipping his tie up and down and another worker says “I admire your ability to get paid for that”. Nothing gets done in the UN. The only remaining useful agency of it that I’m aware of is the Security Council, which at least is still able to do a little snooping around the nuke facilities in Iran, and the only remaining usefulness of the building itself is as a forum for all the various enemies of each other to sit around threatening each other with utter disaster, in the kindest of possible ways while smiling so broadly their gums show, when not plotting over coffee how next to attack the US.

Now imagine: You’re sitting in your newly purchased apartment up around, say, the 30th floor or so, looking out your huge living room window at a sweeping view of Manhattan or perhaps the East River. Yes, you agree. Turning the UN building into condos was a fine idea.
