“Iran 2″, The Continuing Saga, Starring Various Ayatollas and The Mad Bomber
Well, the “Glow in the sky over Jerusalem” didn’t happen and Ahmadinejad made himself look like a complete ass to all his fellow Arabs, Sunni and Shia. He gave us the chance to do some creative blogging anyway. Entertainment value.
Meanwhile the Iranians are back to the same tired old refrain of “We will never ever stop refining uranium BUT now we will talk about it again” while they go right on working on making A-bombs, and the UN Security Council does its usual dithering.
The debate continues over whether Israel or Lebanon or Hezbollah won or lost, and here’s my take:
#1, Lebanon had by far the most people killed and took huge damage. Lebanon lost the most. Hezbollah had 700 or so of its fighters killed and the civilian population doesn’t want any more war, so Hezbollah is Loser #2. If Hezbollah wants to start it up again they’ll meet with a lot of governmental resistance this time as the Lebanese army actually appears to be making a real effort to enforce the conditions of the cease-fire.
Loser #3 is Israel. They lost a lot of loved ones and took a lot of damage. Their government came off as indecisive, and the reality is that they have no real guarantee that it won’t all happen all over again and probably a lot worse next time, and they never got back the abducted young men that were the reason for going to war.
Loser #4 is Iran. Their entrenched 15-mile-wide, or so, strip of Southern Lebanon that was infested with their fighters has been neutralized and they have gained nothing. Instead they have lost a huge financial investment and a base for the future attack they no doubt had planned. Moreover, the rest of the Arab nations did a lot of re-aligning behind the scenes and none of it is good news for Iran.
Loser #5 is France. Their back-pedalling and blatant front-and-center whining has certified their world reputation of weak-willed cowardice. They were the most vocal in demanding a cease-fire, helped to craft the agreement, had agreed to supply the main force to disarm Hezbollah and lead the 15,000 multi-national troops. Instead they reneged, offered only 200 soldiers and wanted a guarantee (from whom?) of their troops safety, and so far have sent only 50. Now there is no doubt left that France has become a nation of Dhimmi appeasers, just as they were with the Germans in WW II. Only now there’s no Resistance.
Loser #6 is the West. Civilization would have been far better off if Israel had been much more aggressive, much less mindful of civilian casualties, and disinclined to stop until Hezbollah was wiped out or capitulated.
That’s it. Everybody lost. That’s how wars are. There are never any winners in war, just different levels of losers. Problem with this one is it’s not done yet. It’s like one of those “Series” movies, like “Rocky”, Rocky 2″, “Rocky 3″… This was a mini-battle. The sequel is still in the making and the final episode will be the final episode.
