August 22 could usher in an apocalyptic period in the Middle East thanks to some belligerent action on the part of the Iranian regime. Or maybe not.
Speculation abounds. I’ve already done all mine in a previous post. Now the louder voices are having their turn. There was an old expression that is only found now in antique novels, about the suspense getting so thick that “Everyone was on tenterhooks”. I could look it up but why spoil the fun? Does anyone know what a tenterhook is? No cheating, now.

From memory now…
Tenterhooks were/are small hooks used to hold meat and game for a period of time, to allow them to become more ‘tender’. often seen in butcher shop windows. sometimes a careless person would stick themselves with the hook, which, as you can imagine, is painful.
So Tender(ing) Hooks, over time became tenterhooks.
Further, Suspense, Suspend, game is suspended from tenterhooks.
Is etymology cool or what?
Also Coprology is the study of islam.

Nope, sorry Merlin. I cheated and looked it up. That’s not what tenterhooks are.

Is a tenterhook something to do with making woolen thread ?
Or is it a hook to hold up something in a tent ?

Now it can be told. A “tenter” is a frame for stretching cloth. Tenterhooks hook into the edges of the cloth and are pulled tight to the frame to stretch the cloth. The cloth is put under tension.
So. Tense people are “on tenterhooks”. Amazingly enough, a Google of the word “tenterhook” will produce lots of current websites where people are still using that old expressiion.

Rasta – I have actually used that expression ‘I feel like I’m on tenterhooks’ and people look at me strange. I have had to explain it several times.
